When St Dominic founded the Order of Preachers, the style of religious life which emerged was heavily influenced by its time. Monasticism was the only kind of religious life which was in existence at the time, both for men and for women. However, St Dominic, as well as his contemporary St Francis of Assisi, founded forms of religious life that were also focussed on apostolic activity outside the confines of the community of brothers. Many features of monastic life were kept by both Orders, and that included liturgical prayer: Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours. |
